A blind spade is a solid, circular metal disc with an extended handle (paddle). It is inserted between two companion flanges to physically block the flow of fluid or gas through a piping system during maintenance or shutdown periods.

The extended handle serves a critical visual purpose: maintenance crews can see from a distance that the pipeline is safely isolated. Once maintenance is complete, the spade is removed or swapped with its companion ring spacer to restore full flow.
