How to Select the Right Flange Facing for Piping Systems

Flange facing is an important factor when selecting flanges for industrial piping systems. The correct facing helps ensure proper gasket sealing, connection reliability and long-term performance.

The most common flange facings include Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF), and Ring Type Joint (RTJ).

Raised Face (RF) is widely used in process piping, oil and gas, petrochemical and general industrial applications. The raised sealing surface concentrates the gasket pressure and provides reliable sealing performance. RF flanges are commonly manufactured according to ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47 and EN 1092-1.

Flat Face (FF) flanges have a completely flat sealing surface. They are often used with cast iron or ductile iron equipment where excessive bolt stress could damage the equipment flange. The gasket normally covers the entire flange face.

Ring Type Joint (RTJ) flanges are designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. A specially machined metal ring is installed into the groove between two RTJ flanges. This design provides excellent sealing performance and is frequently used in oil and gas applications.

When selecting flange facing, buyers should consider pressure rating, operating temperature, fluid medium, gasket type, flange material and equipment connection.
